Low Cost Access for whānau in Wairarapa

 Whaiora Medical Centre was established in 2010. It is the only Very Low Cost Access (VLCA) Medical Centre in the Wairarapa.

Whaiora has an enrolled population of 70% or more high needs patients. A high needs population is defined as “Māori, Pacific or anyone living in the New Zealand Deprivation Index quintile 5” (Ministry of Health, 2006).

At Whaiora Medical Centre
we offer:
 

  • Consultations with a General Practitioner (GP), Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Nurse
  • Access to visiting specialist services
  • Support for long term conditions, e.g. heart health, asthma, diabetes
  • Vaccinations, immunisations, medical tests, and minor surgery
  • ATAT – Acute Telephone Assessment Triage
  • Same day appointments for urgent illnesses or injuries
  • Online health services, such as Manage My Health
  • Repeat prescription services for certain stable condition

Physiotherapy Services

Grounded in a kaupapa Māori approach that recognises the interconnectedness of tinana, hinengaro, wairua, and whānau. Our experienced physiotherapist provides personalised assessment and treatment to support your recovery journey.

We offer support for:

  • Sports injuries

  • Ankle, knee, shoulder and elbow injuries

  • Post-operative rehabilitation

  • Workstation and ergonomic support

  • ACC claims accepted

We work alongside you and your whānau with manaakitanga and whanaungatanga, focusing on long-term wellbeing rather than quick fixes.

Extended Care Paramedic

Timely, accessible care for patients who are unable to see a doctor but need prompt assessment and treatment. Our experienced paramedic provides holistic, whānau-centred support across a wide range of health concerns.

Common presentations include:

  • Asthma or COPD flare-ups

  • Chest infections and cold/flu symptoms

  • Urinary tract infections

  • Ear, nose and throat concerns

  • Skin infections and wound care

Emergency contraception is also available. Casual patient fees apply.

Delivered with manaakitanga, this service helps reduce barriers when accessing a GP is not possible.

Mirimiri & Romiromi

Grounded in traditional Māori healing practices that support balance across tinana, hinengaro, and wairua. These sacred practices help release physical, emotional, and spiritual tension, supporting reconnection to your mauri.

Mirimiri is a gentle, energetic light-touch approach that supports deep relaxation and energy flow.

Romiromi is more physically focused bodywork that may be deeper and more intensive, sometimes incorporating kōhatu or rākau to stimulate healing pathways.

Delivered with manaakitanga and respect for tikanga, creating a safe and culturally grounded healing space.
